Herr was a journalist who covered the Vietnam War for Esquire magazine. He arrived in Vietnam in 1967, and he spent the next four years reporting on the war from the front lines. He witnessed some of the most horrific battles of the war, and he came to know many of the soldiers who fought in it.

In Carrying the Fire, Herr writes about the war in a way that is both personal and journalistic. He tells the stories of the soldiers he met, and he describes the sights and sounds of the war in vivid detail. He also writes about the impact of the war on American culture, and he explores the ways in which the war changed the country.

Carrying the Fire is a powerful and important book. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the Vietnam War or the social and cultural changes that took place during that time.
