The Twisted Beginnings of a Monster

Edward Theodore Gein was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, on August 27, 1906. His upbringing was marked by poverty and a dysfunctional family, with an abusive alcoholic father and a domineering mother who instilled in him a deep fear of women.

As a young man, Gein was a quiet and withdrawn loner, working odd jobs and living in a dilapidated farmhouse with his mother. It was after her death in 1945 that his mental state took a sinister turn.

A Grisly Discovery

In November 1957, police officers investigating a missing persons case stumbled upon a gruesome sight at Gein's farm. Inside, they discovered a macabre collection of human remains, including:

  • Parts of female corpses, including heads, body parts, and organs
  • Clothing and furniture made from human skin
  • Lampshades fashioned from human skulls

A Psychopath's Twisted Motives

As Schechter delves into Gein's twisted mind, he reveals a complex and disturbing array of motives that drove his heinous actions. Gein's hatred of women stemmed from his childhood experiences, and he believed that by wearing their skin, he could become a woman himself.

He also had a morbid fascination with body parts, which he believed held supernatural powers. He would often visit graveyards to dig up fresh corpses, from which he would collect his gruesome trophies.

A Trial That Shocked the Nation

Gein's crimes sent shockwaves through Wisconsin and beyond. His trial in 1958 was a media circus, with newspapers and television stations covering every gruesome detail.

Gein was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison. He spent the rest of his days at the Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Waupun, Wisconsin, where he died of respiratory failure in 1984.

A Legacy of Terror

Eddie Gein's legacy lives on, not only in the annals of true crime but also in the realm of popular culture. His crimes have inspired numerous films, television shows, and books, including:

  • Psycho (1960)
  • The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
  • Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Gein's story remains a chilling reminder of the darkest corners of the human psyche. Through "Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done," Schechter invites readers to confront the horrors of evil and explore the depths of a mind consumed by madness.
