Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City is a 2016 book by Matthew Desmond that documents the lives of eight families facing eviction in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 2017 and has been praised for its unflinching look at the human toll of poverty and eviction.
Desmond spent three years embedded in Milwaukee's poorest neighborhoods, following the families as they struggled to keep a roof over their heads. He witnessed the toll that eviction takes on families, both emotionally and financially. Evicted families are more likely to experience homelessness, job loss, and health problems. Children who are evicted are more likely to fall behind in school and to have behavioral problems.
Evicted is a powerful indictment of the American housing system. Desmond shows how the system is rigged against low-income families, making it almost impossible for them to escape poverty. He calls for a fundamental change in the way we think about housing, and he offers a number of concrete policy proposals to help end eviction.
Evicted is a must-read for anyone who cares about poverty and inequality in America. It is a powerful and moving book that will change the way you think about housing.
