Firetto was evacuated to a hospital in Baghdad, where he underwent emergency surgery. The doctors were able to save his life, but they told him that he would never see again.

The Long Road to Recovery

Firetto spent the next several months in the hospital, undergoing extensive rehabilitation. He had to learn how to walk, talk, and eat again. He also had to deal with the emotional trauma of losing his sight.
