Early Life and Football Roots
Martin Edward Schottenheimer was born on September 23, 1943, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. From a young age, he displayed an exceptional athletic talent, excelling in both basketball and football. As a standout quarterback at Canon-McMillan High School, he caught the attention of college recruiters and eventually received a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh.
At Pittsburgh, Schottenheimer continued to shine as a quarterback, leading the team to a 26-3 record during his three seasons as a starter. His impressive performances earned him All-American honors and recognition as one of the top prospects in the country. Despite his talent, Schottenheimer's NFL career was cut short due to a shoulder injury.
Coaching Ascent: From Assistant to Head Coach
Undeterred by his playing setback, Schottenheimer embarked on a coaching career that would span over four decades. He began as a defensive assistant with the New York Jets in 1974 and quickly climbed the ranks, serving as defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns and the Kansas City Chiefs.
In 1985, Schottenheimer's coaching abilities were recognized when he was named head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Under his leadership, the Browns emerged as a perennial powerhouse, reaching the AFC Championship game six times in his seven seasons there.
Kansas City Chiefs: The Heights of Success
In 1992, Schottenheimer moved to Kansas City to take over the Chiefs' head coaching position. It was there that he reached the pinnacle of his success, guiding the team to 10 AFC West division championships and 13 playoff appearances.
The Chiefs' high-powered offense, known as the "Run and Shoot," became one of the most feared in the league under Schottenheimer's innovative leadership. The team consistently ranked among the top offenses in the league, led by Pro Bowl quarterback Joe Montana and running back Marcus Allen.
Playoff Heartbreak and Unfulfilled Trophy Dreams
Despite Schottenheimer's remarkable regular season accomplishments, playoff success eluded him. His teams appeared in the AFC Championship game seven times but never managed to reach the Super Bowl. The heartbreaking losses in those games became a recurring theme throughout his career, earning him the dubious distinction of being the coach with the most playoff victories (20) without ever reaching the Super Bowl.
Legacy of Innovation and Inspiration
While Schottenheimer's name may not be as well-known as others in football history, his legacy as a coach is indisputable. His innovative defensive schemes, known as the "Blitzburgh" defense, revolutionized the game and are still studied by coaches today.
Beyond his X's and O's, Schottenheimer was also renowned for his motivational skills and his ability to connect with his players. He believed in discipline and hard work but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and loyalty within his teams.
Retirement and Later Years
Schottenheimer retired from coaching in 2006, having spent 21 seasons as a head coach. He finished his career with a regular season record of 200-126-1, making him one of only three coaches in NFL history to win 200 games without reaching the Super Bowl.
Following his retirement, Schottenheimer remained active in the football community, serving as a television analyst and consultant. He also dedicated time to philanthropic endeavors, supporting charities and mentoring young coaches.
Marty Schottenheimer: The Coach Who Really Did Win It
Marty Schottenheimer's career was a testament to the power of determination, innovation, and belief. While the Super Bowl trophy eluded him, his legacy extends far beyond that singular accomplishment. He was a master coach who touched the lives of countless players and fans, leaving an enduring mark on the game of football.
