Rifke Rosenstein was born in Poland in 1919. She was the youngest of six children in a Jewish family. Her childhood was happy and carefree, but everything changed in 1939 when the Nazis invaded Poland.
Rifke's family was forced into a ghetto, and then into a concentration camp. Rifke witnessed unimaginable horrors during her time in the camp, but she never lost hope. She helped to care for the sick and the dying, and she always tried to find ways to make life a little bit better for her fellow prisoners.
In 1945, Rifke was liberated from the camp. She weighed only 65 pounds and was suffering from typhus. But she was determined to rebuild her life.
Rifke immigrated to the United States in 1946. She married and had two children. She also became a successful businesswoman. But she never forgot the horrors she had witnessed during the Holocaust.
In 1985, Rifke founded the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Foundation. The foundation's mission is to educate people about the Holocaust and to promote tolerance and understanding.
Rifke Rosenstein died in 2015 at the age of 96. She was a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to helping others. Her story is an inspiration to us all.
