In his groundbreaking new book, Why Business Won't Save the World, leading social critic Ronald Wright argues that the profit-driven, growth-obsessed model of capitalism is fundamentally incompatible with the preservation of the planet. Drawing on decades of research and firsthand observation, Wright shows how the pursuit of profit has led to a host of environmental and social crises, including climate change, inequality, and resource depletion. He also argues that the current system is unsustainable and that we need to find a new way of organizing our economy and our societies if we want to avoid catastrophe.
Wright's book is a powerful indictment of the current global economic system. He shows how the pursuit of profit has led to a relentless drive for growth, which in turn has led to the overconsumption of resources, the destruction of natural habitats, and the pollution of the environment. He also argues that the current system is inherently unfair, with the wealthy and powerful reaping the benefits of economic growth while the poor and marginalized are left behind.
Wright does not offer any easy solutions to the problems he identifies. He does, however, argue that we need to start thinking about a new economic system that is based on sustainability and social justice. He also calls for a radical change in our values, away from materialism and consumption and towards a more meaningful and sustainable way of life.
Why Business Won't Save the World is a challenging and provocative book that will force you to rethink your assumptions about the global economy. It is a must-read for anyone who is concerned about the future of our planet and our species.
