In 1605, a young Native American boy named Tisquantum was captured by English raiders and sold into slavery in Spain. He eventually escaped and made his way back to his home in present-day Massachusetts. When the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth in 1620, Squanto was there to greet them. He spoke English and was able to help the Pilgrims learn about the land and its people. He also taught them how to grow corn and other crops, which helped them to survive their first winter in the New World.
Squanto's story is a reminder of the importance of friendship and cooperation. He was a man who was willing to put his own life on the line to help others. He is a true American hero.
