When George was 11 years old, his father died suddenly. George was devastated by the loss of his father, but he knew that he had to be strong for his family. He helped his mother manage the plantation and took on more responsibilities around the house.

Two years later, George's mother died. George was now an orphan, but he was not alone. His older brother, Lawrence, took him in and raised him as his own son.
