Early Life and Career

Joe DiMaggio was born on November 25, 1914, in Martinez, California. He was the son of Italian immigrants, and he grew up speaking Italian at home. DiMaggio began playing baseball at a young age, and he quickly showed a natural talent for the game. He played for several semi-professional teams before signing with the New York Yankees in 1936.

The Yankee Clipper

DiMaggio quickly became one of the most popular players on the Yankees. He was known for his smooth swing and his ability to hit for power and average. DiMaggio also had a great arm and was a superb fielder in center field. He was nicknamed the "Yankee Clipper" because of his speed and grace on the field.

The 56-Game Hitting Streak

In 1941, DiMaggio went on a 56-game hitting streak, which is still the longest hitting streak in Major League Baseball history. During the streak, DiMaggio had 91 hits in 223 at-bats, for a batting average of .408. The streak came to an end on July 17, 1941, when DiMaggio grounded out to Cleveland Indians shortstop Lou Boudreau.

Later Career and Legacy

DiMaggio continued to play for the Yankees until 1951, when he retired after 13 seasons. He finished his career with a batting average of .325, 361 home runs, and 1,537 RBIs. DiMaggio was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.

Personal Life

DiMaggio married actress Marilyn Monroe in 1954, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1955. DiMaggio later married Dorothy Arnold, and the couple remained together until DiMaggio's death in 1999.

Legacy

Joe DiMaggio is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He was a gifted hitter, fielder, and runner, and he helped the New York Yankees win 10 World Series championships. DiMaggio was also a popular figure off the field, and he was known for his good looks and his charming personality.
